First Steps

AH! Where does all the time go? Sorry for the lack of posts lately. Things have been a bit crazy since I graduated last Friday. Well today, I am elated to announce that I have accepted a long-term sub position at the school where I completed my first student teaching assignment. I will be working in a 5th/6th GATE classroom and start Monday! I predict it is going to be an insanely hectic weekend, but in the extremely profound words of Barney from How I Met Your Mother, "Challenge accepted!".

It was a really tough decision. I thought about it, thought about it some more, slept, and thought about it again. I was weighing the pros and cons of this opportunity to work with a new group of students amidst fighting a mix of emotions from a ton of other major life changes. I've yet to have any experience working with GATE students and I remember one lecture about it during my M. Ed. coursework. Admittedly I'm nervous, but I think this will be an amazing chance for me to enhance my teaching. I was also hoping for something a bit more permanent, but as everyone knows teaching jobs are scarce and ultimately my decision came down to taking a guaranteed foot in the door over a possible chance to have a rumored available classroom teaching position.

I know that I will work hard and learn and grow as a teacher during the next half year. It may not be the dream first job that I had envisioned I would have, but I just finished grad school. I'm no dinosaur. I have time. I'm grateful for this chance to work with a classroom of students regardless of the circumstances and am so looking forward to the experiences I will gain. It's funny to see how much someone's opinion on something can change when he/she is faced with making a major decision. Just one month ago, I would have told you subbing wasn't for me, but here I am - excited as can be. I'm going in tomorrow morning to help set up the classroom! Any and all resources that you want to send my way would be greatly appreciated!

  1. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!! Long term sub gigs often lead to contract positions, so I think you made a great decision that may take a while to pay off, but it will, one way or another. And you know....hit me up if you need anything--I know that age level pretty well.:) YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY. We must celebrate........

    Congrats!!!!!
