Fashionate About Teaching

Hi Friends,

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season. Again, time seems to have passed me by and I've been rather lazy with my posts. Classroom updates soon, I promise! Now that I'm on my winter break though, I thought I'd do a for-fun post today and blog about my teacher wardrobe. Fellas, read no further. Just kidding! :)

If I could describe my fashion sense in one word it would be: simple. I'm not one to (over) accessorize, I often avoid loud colors like the plague, and I don't deviate too far from what I know I like. In other words, I'm not much of a risk-taker when it comes to my outfits. That being said, I do love to express myself through my clothes especially for my kids.

Growing up, I've always battled self-esteem issues and although I've gotten much better about them now than in my adolescent years, I still find myself having body image issues from time to time. I promised myself that when I became a teacher I would foster and nurture good self-esteem in my students at a young age. As a teacher, things you say obviously speak, but things you do and even what you wear can have just as much an impact on your students. I want my students to be confident in themselves, in their peers, and in their teacher. So much of where I derive my confidence from is from how I feel. When I dress properly, I feel like a million and one bucks. I aim to look professional while maintaining a level of comfort and casualness. Being comfortable is key to pulling off a good teacher outfit. I'm on my feet pretty much from 6 in the morning to whenever I get home - comfort is key.

This is an outfit I've worn to school before and being a resident of beautiful San Diego, I don't really experience seasons. So even though it is winter, outfits like these are pretty much staples for me all year round.

The Look: Believe it or not, I don't actually spend a lot of money on clothes but my closet is insanely full (my boyfriend will attest to that). The secret? Thrift stores, consignment stores, and hand-me-downs! I love getting free clothes and playing around with different outfit combinations to truly make it my own. It's also super wallet-friendly because you know, us teachers have so much extra cash lying around. For my top I wore a light pastel pink button down shirt and for the bottom, dark skinny jeans. Personally, I don't have any qualms with wearing jeans to work. The general rule of thumb is "the darker the better" if you're going for a more professional look. I love to throw in some kind of pattern when wearing monocolor tops so this dark navy cardigan with white stripes was just perfect. Put on your favorite pair of fall boots and finish the look off with your favorite teacher watch and you are all set! I'm sporting the gorgeous new watch my boyfriend got me for Christmas.

Look confident. Feel confident. Be confident!

Happy Thursday everyone!
